Re-Subbing to Bass Player Magazine? Watch your account!

These dorks charged my checking account twice on 1/1, then again today on 1/7. They refunded one of the first two charges on 1/2 and are supposedly refunding the third sometime today.

So I give them a call and somehow manage not to yell into the phone. Their response:

"It's a glitch in our system."

YA THINK?

What the hell is wrong with people? If I had a "glitch" like that I would... oh, I don't know... TURN THE SYSTEM OFF?

Idiots.

I used to work in publishing and note that most magazines do not handle their own circulation, they usually subcontract it out.

Very few mom and pop magazines (usually trade mags with a circ of less than 10,000) still do that on their own, sometimes with an Excel spreadsheet or a dirty Microsoft Access app programmed by one of the editors' nephew, who "is really good with computers".

But most likely it's the first one, but the second is possible (I swear I have seen everything when I used to work as a consultant).

Every magazine I subscribe to does this. I swear, they must spend most of the money I send them on sending out mail for re-subbing.

I've actually canceled most of my magazine subscriptions due to the "renew NOW!" and I just subscribed postcards. Now, I go to the book store and buy it if it's interesting to me. Amazingly enough, I'm saving money.....because it's mostly ads nowadays

Bass Player gave me a year free of charge to make up for their mistakes. When I get my second refund back in my checking account I will be fully satisfied.

I don't let the re-sub notices bother me. I just toss them in the trash with the rest of the junk mail.

I get the subscriptions because they are cost-efficient.

Cover price on any music magazine nowadays is at least $6. If you buy that mag more than twice a year, you save money by subscribing. If you get multi-year subs, you usually save a lot more.

Plus it saves me from having to go into a store to pick up an article and hunting from store to store cuz the newest issue sold out.

They got my refund after a few days. So I got a free year for a couple of headaches. I don't think it was worth it.

I subscribed in June - they immediately started sending renewal notices - I just got one Friday again. Freaking annoying and a waste of paper and resources if they are doing this times thousands of subscribers.

What about all the people who didn't catch it? How much money did they make from the "glitch"?

I subscribe, too. I also get the renew notices all the time. I'll give 'em the money when I need to, not any sooner. Not with the way the publishing industry is going right now.

Un-freaking-believable.

They're sending me "save your subscription from expiration" emails... four weeks after they got the money from my checking account for my latest renewal.

BP.com isn't reflecting the update either.

I really should NOT have refrained from profanity in my message to customer service.

I surely would. It's not like you're out any money, and saving newsstand equivalent price of @72 bux is nothing to sniff at.

Well that was their first round of goof-ups two years ago.

And IIRC, they put me into overdraft because they caused me to bounce a debit card payment or two.

My last post happened today.
