Reading music... music to play while reading

Now that school's started again I'm spending a lot of time reading during the commute to and from school. It seems like I have to choose between the iPod and the book; if I listen to music, I'm too distracted by it to read!

What are some good bands and albums to have in the background while you're reading? Clearly it has to be something ambient that doesn't draw your attention too much. Any good suggestions?

+1 If it's got words, I'll start siging along.

I usually like Miles' Kind of Blue or Bitches Brew.

Eeeek. I usually have to choos, too. I go into auto-transcribe mode when I listen sometime. Nice, but not necessarily good...

Anton Webern's Five Pieces for Small Orchestra, Op. 10 is pretty subtle and quiet.

Just about any gamelan music without singing is pretty sweet unless they've got a gong ageng and your headphones really have good bass response.

It would be an interesting project to write and record your own music just for the purpose you intend it for.

I'm not sure I'd want to be known for writing music that's easy to just tune out.

usually when I'm trying to study I put on either some Chuck Mangione or some George Gershwin. Some thing smooth that sets a good pace for whatever I'm doing.
