(Real) Country Music?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am attending a family event tomorrow, and my girlfriend's grandpa (who is an old time acoustic pickin' country musician) is going to be playing. He had mentioned that he wants me to bring my bass (assuming my upright) so we can jam some tunes out. I am familiar with the country cut time feel, and the Root-V, and IV I patterns, but I fear I may need a little practice on some progressions.

So, can anyone suggest some standard country tunes (think Johnny cash style, as well as traditional) that I could snag to play along with?

And yes, I googled this question already with no success.

Hmmm

There must be a million of them.

Anything by Hank Williams Sr. - Jambalaya, Kaw Liga, I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You) etc

Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues, Hey Porter

Hank Williams Jr. - Family Tradition

Buck Owens - Tiger By The Tail, Act Naturally

Dave Dudley - Six Days On The Road

Don Gibson - Don't Tell Me Your Troubles

Just a few

I loves me some old school country.

As long as you know that the odd chord (if any) will be a II or a VI, you'll do fine.

You know, to be honest, I didn't check this thread until today.

As far as the jam goes, i didn't even play the bass because I was watching kids and socializing most of the time. However, after things slowed down a little bit, I hopped onto the upright piano and did my best to try to fit in musically, which was pretty challenging, but ultimately rewarding. So, now I am going to check out some of these recordings and artists that you guys have listed, thanks for the replys.
