Thumbs up Realized 2 Things Just a Short Time Ago...

Sign in to disble this ad
1) I hate high end in my signal, especially non-distortion high end... and 2) I really don't like Wah either...

I was just using my new wah setup and just really got really annoyed all of a sudden. Then it hit me, my sub on my stereo wasn't excurting! And, it was really pissing me off! It was like the entire reason I play bass in the first place wasn't hapnin'. So I did the logical thing an pluged in my PDDI all on its own. Set it up for SVT, played, and then (not really, but you should get the point!) That's when I pulled out all the stops and set it up as so:

No treble, just a whole lotta lows/low-mids. I even turned down the tone knob for even less treble! Quite evil sounding. Suddenly it doesn't bother me that I have extra FX, or even a whole board laying around. I have my Rig Of Doom!!!!

I've decided to add a multiple choice poll just to see how many others hate guitar like high end (aka Treble) as well as how many have a good number of FX just collecting dust...

Unless I'm covering something, I usually don't use alot of treble. I usually go as low as I can go. If I could go so low its inaudible to the human ears, and feels only like a godly presence in the air as it rattles your bones...I would.

I love tweaking tone simply for variety's sake. I play in a number of bands, and play many genres of music from many eras. For modern rock (Nickelback, Chili Peppers) I usually like treble in my tone. For Motown/blues I often emphasize bass and low mids.

Sometimes I just go with whatever suits my mood. I've used treble and overdrive for blues and country (but not too over-the-top for the gig).

Cutting out all the treble completely may sound alright when you're by yourself. But Personally I feel is that you loose clarity of sound in larger settings. I like some treble and mids to really cut through the mix.

Well I said "Hate treble" and "Have a few effects kicking around"...

but...

Treble to me helps bring out the "full" sound of the bass - and as I've discovered, you can still have treble and not sound clacky or like you're playing with a pick if you just cut your nails once every week or so...that way you still get the high freqs but not in an annoying way (clickety-clack with nails).

Sometimes if I've got new strings on or if i can't get rid of the click even after cutting my nails then sure - I turn the treble down on my bass a bit...but otherwise I leave my treble up full for the sake of technique

Pedals - I've got a few (one of each basic effect...y'know) and sometimes these work fine, but I usually just don't bother with them...apart from maybe a little distortion every now and then (the "growl" type...) - but I'm generally a purist apart from some mild dirt...

Reporting Back...!

Some interesting responces. Using the settings above I get quite the low-to-low-mid growl, with just enough dist-generated treble to make it interesting. If I want no treble at all, I just lower the volume on my bass just a tad, and boom! all the growl, none of the sparkle. Sounds extra ballsy playing finger-style which, along with setting my passives tone knob to "min", cuts down on the treb even more!

BTW I just took my old board, switched out the CEB-3 for my MD-2, and I've set it up as my guitar board Can't wait to do some test recordings of both!

Some interesting responses BTW, especially concerning the treble discovery. The one that really sums up how I feel is:

Actually, I like a bit of treble in my tone. It helps give my tone character, you know? Plus, you've gotta have some treble for slap.

I don't like it to get too overwhelming, though. I usually have the tone knob on my bass all the way up, so my effects can get a bit of extra high-end to grab on to, and then I turn the treble way down at the amp. Some still comes through though.

If you guys what bone-shattering lows, I suggest you pick upa a Digitech Whammy, set it to the one octave down setting, and play fingerstyle. That gets fun
