Duologues, which is a duo consisting of Jim Hall and Enrico Pieranunzi. Most excellent!

The Whole Bunch, by the Martijn van Iterson Quartet. My favorite at the moment.

There's two that i think would have to be in any jazz collection.

Petite Blonde - Live in Germany (Denis Chambers on drums is awesome)

Miles Davis - Tutu (No explanation needed here)

One of my favorites, Marcus Miller - The sun don't lie (I think one of his best works) I've lent this disc out a few times and ended up re-buying a few too.

Luther Vandross with Marcus Miller playing bass is very cool.

Jazz is a broad term. Some of what I'm giving you could be called Funk, Pop, Fusion...but to me, it's "close enough for Jazz". You said you were just getting into Jazz. None of this is really straight-ahead, old-school Jazz, and it all features good electric bass playing.

John Scofield
Yellow Jackets
Allan Holdsworth
Mike Stern
Bill Evans (sax)
Miles Davis
Bob Berg
Flim and the BBs
Gary Willis/Tribal Tech
Dave Weckl
Dennis Chambers
Chick Corea Electric Band
Michael Brecker/Brecker Brothers
Steve Khan
Bill Bruford
Vital Information
Herbie Hancock
Jaco Pastorious/Weather Report
Steely Dan
Dixie Dregs
Tower of Power
Marcus Miller
Meshell Ndegeocello
Randy Bernson
Los Lobotomys

I personally can't stand Miles Davis' 80s recordings like "Tutu", or the Marcus Miller albums like for instance "The Sun Don't Lie" (it just collects dust on my CD shelf). Both sounds way too sterile for my taste, but taste is different.

I prefer more traditional jazz or jazz/funk by artists like Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Michael Brecker, Chick Corea, Donald Byrd, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane etc etc etc, and Jaco / Weather Report fusion/jazz stuff.

And although not typical jazz, Steely Dan has a very jazzy approach in their music that is worth checking out.

From a bassist's point of view, I recommend the Jaco Pastorius Big Band - Word of Mouth Revisited album from 2003/2004. It's a very cool album featuring a lot of the world's greatest electric bassists (jazzers) playing Jaco's music. 5 stars album, if you ask me.

EDIT: Cool list above from Basshole. (I had a lunchbreak before I posted this...) Los Lobotomys is very cool, check out their album from the early 90's with Steve Lukather on guitar/vocals. GREAT album in the rock/fusion genre, featuring some very impressive bass playing by John Pena!

EDIT 2: Jazz guitarists: Check out George Benson albums, but you might want to skip the 80s butter-soft pop sessions.. Also, check out Jay Graydon's work, he has an album named simply Bebop which is really nice, plain jazz.
