Recommend me some Jazz artists =]

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,
I've recently been re-inspired to go back and learn some funky bass guitar licks in Electric jazz but I've only got a few albums in my collection and i'm looking to expand... but i honestly have no idea where to look. Some albums in the style im looking for include:
- Jaco Pastorious Big Band - The Word is Out (and i S'pose stuff like the chicken is pretty cool too)
- Brecker Brothers - Heavy Metal bebop (although i much prefer the way they play it live at Fuji. It's on youtube if you don't know the sound)
- Chick corea Elektric Band - To the stars.

So i guess really any electric jazz/funk/soul. Fast or slow. Slap or smooth bass. Combo or Big Band. Songs, Artists, Albums. Just Give me stuff

Thanks a lot

I know this album is held in high regard but IMO I find it to be one of the worst "fuzak" albums ever! Just can't get into it's lazy songs and dire melodies! I've heard Chick do much better!

I'll recommend Weather Report's 1982 self titled album. Massively underrated, and featuring some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful music ever. Volcano for Hire is just sublime, especially the mid section in which Joe Zawinul just lets rip. The other standout for me is Dara Factor One, which is a live studio jam. It starts out with this wacky drum beat, before joe starts playing over it. When Jaco gets into this mix, he comes out with these beautifully tasteful licks, every one perfectly formed and perfectly in time. It's musical compostion of the highest form, as he perfectly crafts every note you hear. Some of the licks you wish were developed more, such is their beauty and passing grace! Sad to think that Jaco would soon be homeless afterwards!

Seriously, Dara Factor One is the track to hear, I must say!

Well if you get outside of fusion, Lonnie Plaxico has some great jams. His solo album is awesome...

Thanks for the great feedback!
Only listened to a handful but i found the pat methany trio stuff good as well as the lonnie plaxico stuff. Some of the Corea stuff was awesome too. I found the herbie charts, although great to be a little too empty and slow for my liking, but there were deffinatly some great tunes there.

You know the definition of JAZZ FESTIVAL, right?

A performance for which people pay a lot of money to not listen to a number of different groups who aren't playing jazz anyway.

Try early tom waits stuff (1970s). Beautiful music. All of his stuff is beautiful actually . This is before he went super eclectic with the experimental stuff.

If you can stand electronic music, I'll recommend LTJ Bukem's compilations, as well as some of Squarepusher's stuff. Squarepusher is a great bass player too!
good luck!
