By the way, if you don't own Rust In Peace by Megadeth, you need to go get it NOW!

Try some Hatebreed for the metal/hardcore type stuff. Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine - crazy technical math metal. Bad Acid Trip - kind of a cross between the above.

If you're looking for thrash I'd say make sure you own music from these bands if you don't already.

Slayer
Kreator
Exodus
Megadeth
Anthrax
older Sepultura

Or if you want more progressive stuff:
Death
Atheist
Cynic

Err, guys, he said no death or black metal. Good stuff, though.

I recommend Spiral Architect.

math metal: what a drummer plays when he can count past 4

maybe try some apocalyptica, though that's across a lot of different styles

A bunch of people have already listed my favorite metal and trash bands (particularly Iron Maiden and Megadeth), so here's some additional options:

Judas Priest - old school British Heavy Metal, but good stuff regardless.

Arch Enemy has some awesome stuff, too. The female vocalist is the screaming type, but it's still really good (to me, anyway).

Death Angel is another recommendation - they're a trash band from the 80s that got a huge boost when Kirk Hammett (of Metallica) helped produce one of their early albums.

Ministry- "Psalm 69". the original industrial thrash powerhouse!

Strapping Young Lad- Industrial mentalists of the first order. Frontman Devin Townsend's solo records are also genius, although much mellower.

3 Inches Of Blood are pretty old skool.

And finally, Nailbomb- Max Cavalera side project from when he was still in Sepultura. Quality mix of thrash and industrial.
