Recommend me some prog/metal instrumental bands

Sign in to disble this ad
First off, sorry if this is the wrong forum, I couldn't see where else it would fit.

So I have, over the last month or so, fallen in love with Dream Theater, or more specifically their instrumentals. So I come to you, TalkBass, to recommend to me some bands who specialise in instrumental metal. I am looking for more proggy-sounding artists and preferably with bass featuring more (not necessarily at the forefront, but audible). I like odd time signatures and I also like bass with effects applied.

Any recommendations will be looked into and appreciated Cheers.

Liquid Tension Experiment and Jonas Hellborg's Art Metal are fun.

Can't think many other instrumental prog-metal bands right now, except Scale the Summit.

They only have 1 album, which is certainly not instrumental. Though Bulb, who made the music before the band, has a lot of instrumental music.

I don't think there is all that much in the way of instrumental Progressive Metal. A band I recently started listening to called Returning We Hear The Larks are quite a good instrumental Progressive Metal band though. I'm pretty sure most of it is recorded by 1 guy, much like the earlier Bulb stuff too.

Another I'd recommend highly would have to be Keith Merrow. Mainly guitar player, but also records all his other instruments.

You can download both Returning We Hear The Larks and Keith Merrow's stuff for free, with the option to make a small donation if you wish.

Uneven Structure is a good band. Found them in the same place as RWHTL. Only found an EP to download, which was about 20 minutes long. If I recall, it was along the lines of Meshuggah-esque riffing.

I can't remember if Blotted Science have lyrics or not. Their bassist is also playing in the Death Metal band, Cannibal Corpse. Alex somethingorother.

There's someone on these forums who plays in a band called Canvas Solaris. Only came upon his band by accidnet, but I really love them.

Animals As Leaders is the newest band I've heard. Fully instrumental. Kind of Jazz sound to the whole thing. But really brilliantly created.

As for some great Progressive WITH vocals, I'd check out:
Cynic, Decapitated, Gojira, Meshuggah, Nevermore, Nile, Obscura, Opeth, Origin, Pagan's Mind [I think they are Progressive], Periphery [mentioned earlier], [some of] Porcupine Tree, Psyopus, SikTh, Spiral Architect, Strapping Young Lad... and Symphony X.

Hope that's enough to keep you going a while.

Already into Tool and I recently got a heap of Porcupine Tree songs and I'm getting into them too.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll look into them next time I'm at my parents house (free unlimited net, woo). Very much appreciated.

+1 to Gojira. Usually excessive technique gets me about as aroused as picturing Oprah naked, but their album From Mars to Sirius is mindblowing.

Blotted Science don't have lyrics. The bassist's called Alex Webster.

Seriously cool stuff.
