Sign in to disble this ad
for my listening pleasure

I'm currently rocking Nightwish, Within Temptation, Kamelot, Dark Moor, Heavenly, and Edenbridge (I know some of that gets into power metal but that's ok)

any symphonic metal fans out there?

There is very interesting German symphonic death metal band, Haggard. Link to their song:

Symphony X is great. Dream Theater, though they're progressive.

Epica, Evanescence (although they're mainstream, they're very good and close to a lot of symphonic), Yngwie Malmsteen (maybe?), Krypteria, Rhapsody of Fire, Sonata Arctica.

If you're into progressive, I can recommend a few more.

What is "symphonic" specifically? More melodic? ....
Edit: Looked into some of those bands that you said. I am totally off, but give these guys a try if you are into more of new metal. If not, disregard this post. Sorry man.
+1 on Dream Theater and Symphony X. Great bands IMO.

I'm going to guess that it means like melodic (as in melodies) and am going to recommend two bands. One of the being
Conducting From the Grave http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9l-2GtVekI
The last minute or so is the best part. It slows down and becomes clean. Love it.

Second one would be
Return from Exile http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RnfL6Sm8AQ
I think the start of the song is the best, but that is just me. Lots of sweeps, very melodic IMO

They both are new age screamo metalcore, and they are both my favorite bands.

Tell me if I'm off in what Symphonic is. I would love to hear new metal!

Symphonic metal, is mixture of classical music with metal, which does actually uses orchestras or elements of classical music(Baroque elements seems to be most in favor).
bands that would fit somewhat under "symphonic metal" would be within temptation, nightwish.
There is an article in wikipedia of course, so if you are interested - go there.

Rhapsody! [+of Fire]

If you like them, Luca Turrilli's (sp?) solo stuff is very much more of the same.

I have two Rhapsody (of Fire) albums already, quality stuff, not sure why I neglected to mention them. I also have Sonata Arctica and am familiar with Symphony X and Epica. I have heard a couple good Dream Theater songs, been wanting to hear more of them. I don't care so much for most of Apocalyptica, although a couple of their songs are really good (the one featuring the vocalist from Lacuna Coil for example)

Check out Therion, you can't talk symphonic metal without mentioning them. And there are a few metal operas out there that are quite nice: Avantasia (OK, it is more power/melodic metal, but worth it, imo) and Aina. I really dig both. And if you like Kamelot, you might want to check out Angra.

I have heard some old therion, the certainly have a different sound... at least the two songs I heard Avantasia and Angra are both very good. I just heard a pretty kicking song by a band called Turisas on pandora... I'm going to have to look into that

They are actually the opposite -- classical musicians and instruments playing metal, as opposed to electric instruments playing classically oriented music.

It's old school and use no symphony, but Cacophony are great. (Maybe more neo-classical metal)

Funny thing about symphonic metal -- it can be the most epic music in the world, but it can also get very close to sounding like "Yanni at Islands of Adventure."

Hi.

Even though You said Apocalyptica doesn't quite suit your taste, do listen their early stuff.

I'm not a big fan at the slightest, but I happened to be behind the monitor desk on their first major gig, and that performance blew me away. Definitely the highlight of the several bands we did that evening. And there was some pretty big Finnish metal bands on the bill. It was the time before all the "un-necessary load" just four (actually three audible on that gig) cellos.

Regards
Sam
