Recommended Cole Porter tunes?

Sign in to disble this ad
Looks like I may have a gig opportunity to play some Cole Porter tunes with a trio. I haven't had to deal with charts and old school jazz in a LONG time...like 20 years long time.

In trying to get up to speed, what are some of the top Cole Porter songs you guys play?

I figure:

Night and Day
Anything Goes

Here are some Porter tunes I've played. They're all good tunes, every one of them:

Begin the Beguine
Night and Day
Love for Sale
What is this thing called love
You'd be so nice to come home to

Whatever you do, don't call the guys you are going to be playing with and ask them.

Thanks.

Ed...that is why I'm asking here! It doesn't take much effort on my part to be a BEM*, so the Smart Me tries to keep the Dumb Me's lips sealed as much as possible.

I've always wanted to play Cole Porter's "So In Love" (from the show Kiss Me Kate; it's usually done as a rhumba) as a medium swing tune w/ a jazz band.

It's gonna be a lot more DUM if you show up, having worked on
Begin the Beguine
Night and Day
Love for Sale
What is this thing called love
You'd be so nice to come home to

And what they call is
Dream Dancing
Everything I Love
I Love You

etc etc.

To me (and I been doing this a minnit) it makes a LOT more sense to call the cat up and say "What tunes do you want to play?" than it does typing to a buncha people who aren't going to be on the gig.

But do whatcha want, no skin off my nose....

I'm actually getting the set list at some point. But, the cat who is putting this together doesn't know who the other players are yet. Plus, it seems as everything kind of gets put together at the last minute. He's booked the date and is assembling the team.

I'm just trying to get a head start so I'm at least familiar with the what the songs should sound like...not necessarily be able to play them. The first part of my learning process is immersion. So, out of the many, many tunes Mr. Porter has written, I'm trying to get a feel for what frequently gets called.
