Record made of metal?

Found an old record in my attic. It's a 45, has Manfred Mann Doo Wah Diddy on one side, completely flat on the other. No clue why, but it's made of metal! The groves are painted on. Knickerbocker label. The painted groves are flaking terribly and some chips fell off just from holding it. Any ideas if it would damage my turntable? (Couldn't decide if this was misc. or off topic, so I flipped a coin.)

I hope you have a spare stylus handy!!

So I'm guessing it's a yes to damage.

That sounds like a metal master. You pour liquid vinyl into that to make a 45 disc. The other side would get pressed with another master.

Plus one. yep...it's a master used for pressing vinyl copies.

What's the best record for metal?

BackstagePlus 12-10-2012 04:12 PM

Woah, a master? I remember my neighbor giving it to me with a bunch of other records when he moved, but how on earth would he have a master copy? Maybe if it wasn't shot it would be worth something...

Even in that condition it may still have some worth I would contact some record collectors and give them a picture of what you have.

As I recall when I was a kid, there were companies that could make a one-off master disc, and it was in the format as described by the OP: Some sort of shellac on metal. I knew somebody who was in a figure skating competition and had to bring their music in this format. It seems possible to me that the OP's disc is a demo.

This joke hasn't been appreciated enough.

Laugh at it, quote it and post lol, carry on with your life.

Sounds like a studio demo 45...

mjac28 12-10-2012 05:19 PM

I give the OP credit for at least asking first because this could have had a completely different ending and the title could have been "Anyone recommend a good turntable cartridge for xy turntable".

Agreed. I wouldn't bother playing a shellac 45 like that unless you have an old Wilcox-Gay Recordio or similar with a steel spike stylus...
