I still don't know what astronomical is by your standards; there are $100 studio monitors that are an improvement over computer speakers, but not by much, $1000 systems that sound pretty darn good, and systems that cost $1000's per speaker that you normally see in professional studios.
I recommend KRK Rockit 8's for the studio on a budget, but even that is considered too much $$$ by some.
As far as software, since you're using an iMac, I'd recommend Logic Studio. I have no idea how much it costs, since I'm not a Mac guy, but it's the next step up from Garageband, and it's pretty powerful software.
Either that, or look into a ProTools LE or M-Powered PT setup; there are lots of options there regarding price and feature set, so I'd do a Google search and poke around. If you like your Alesis, then you're looking at software only, though, so I'd once again recommend looking at Logic Studio if you're wanting more options, processing, editing etc. than Garageband provides.
As far as noise, if you could post a soundclip, there's a much better chance we could tell you what the noise is. I'd still be willing to bet it's either a grounding problem with the amp (make sure the amp and computer setup are plugged in to the same outlet, just as a start) or it's a noisy amp, or you may have a bad channel in your mixer. It may be that you want to mic the amp, or use a DI between the amp's line out and your mixer.
