Recording problems HELP PLEASE

Sign in to disble this ad
Yesterday I had one of the worst recording sessions I've had in a long time. My friend and I were trying to record guitar and bass and there was just a line of problems we encountered. I am seeking to fix these problems, but I will need a little bit of help from any of you.

I am currently recording with garageband, not the best way to do it, but it will do for now. However, I want to upgrade to a better recording software. Anyone have any ideas? I am using an iMac with Leopard. The mixer I am using is an Alesis MultiMix 8 channell with firewire. Another problem I had was my friend and I were recording from his guitar, plugged into his marshall 100 watt practice amp, and then into the mixer. The problem with this was that there was a lot of "noise" coming from the amp going into the mixer. This "noise" ended up on the recording also. Is there anyway I can fix this problem? Finally, I need better speakers. All I am using is the iMac speakers and they are not doing what I need. Anyone know what type of speakers or studio moniters I can buy for a much better sound quality, but still within a good price range?

Answering any of this information would be extremely helpful!

Thank you

We'll need more info on your budget...different people have different ideas about what the phrase 'reasonable price' means.

I'd also guess that the noise coming from your friend's amp is the noise any guitar amp puts out on its distortion channel, but without soundclips, it's hard to say for sure.

"Cubase" or "logic" are the ones that come to mind. Can't help you about the noise

The noise comes even from when he is not playing with distortion. As far as a price range, I am willing to spend what I need. What I meant by good price range was something that wasn't astronomically big. Sorry for the confusion.

are you micing the amp? or running direct?
what interface are you using?
garage band is as good as any other daw
for the basic capturing of audio.
if you want to try something else
for a great value, i like reaper a lot:

The gutiar is plugged into the amp and then the amp is plugged into the mixer. The mixer has an interface built into it.

I still don't know what astronomical is by your standards; there are $100 studio monitors that are an improvement over computer speakers, but not by much, $1000 systems that sound pretty darn good, and systems that cost $1000's per speaker that you normally see in professional studios.

I recommend KRK Rockit 8's for the studio on a budget, but even that is considered too much $$$ by some.

As far as software, since you're using an iMac, I'd recommend Logic Studio. I have no idea how much it costs, since I'm not a Mac guy, but it's the next step up from Garageband, and it's pretty powerful software.

Either that, or look into a ProTools LE or M-Powered PT setup; there are lots of options there regarding price and feature set, so I'd do a Google search and poke around. If you like your Alesis, then you're looking at software only, though, so I'd once again recommend looking at Logic Studio if you're wanting more options, processing, editing etc. than Garageband provides.

As far as noise, if you could post a soundclip, there's a much better chance we could tell you what the noise is. I'd still be willing to bet it's either a grounding problem with the amp (make sure the amp and computer setup are plugged in to the same outlet, just as a start) or it's a noisy amp, or you may have a bad channel in your mixer. It may be that you want to mic the amp, or use a DI between the amp's line out and your mixer.

Reaper is a great suggestion if you want powerful audio recording and mixing at a good price.

Noise might be a ground loop problem; is there a ground lift switch on the amp you're using?

Monitors - Walter's nailed it. You tell us the $$$, we'll suggest some options for you to start looking at.

Okay, I have fixed several of the problems. The noise problem is pretty much done with because I found out that I am not using the right cables. I was not using TRS (tipped ring sleeve) cables. I have upgraded to Mogami cables and they are doing their job. Logic Studio is a good choice and I am probably going to go with that soon.
