Removing smoke smell from a leather strap?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a leather bass strap that came with a bass that I just love. It is the right length and texture and everything. The only problem is that I can not get the smoke smell out of the strap. Any ideas? I should probably just throw it out and buy a new one but I like this strap. Thanks.

See if cleaning it with saddle soap helps. It should do quite a bit.

Smoke a cigarette and you won't notice the smell.

I don't know if this work for a leather strap, but this worked on another strap that I bought. I left it outside for a few days and let it sit in direct sunlight. A few days later, the smell was gone

I bought my first tin of saddle soap just last year.. I love it. . . That stuff might be your best bet. Follow those instructions however. Best of luck in removing that awful smell. Incidentally, I bought a nice but used 2-button Peavey foot switch over the weekend. Same issue: was owned by a smoker... yuuuuk

Leave in a box of grass cuttings for a couple of days.

Try Coffee

Drop it in a zip bag with a cup of roasted coffee beans. It works good with cases too.

1) Run 5 miles.

2) Rub strap under arms for 10 minutes.

3) You'll never notice the smoke smell again. (Although you may not be able to stand being around the strap.)

can you not febreeze leather?

my other suggestion is to put it in front of a high-powered fan, or so other source of moving air. i used to smoke, a lot of that in my car, which has leather seats, and all it took was a couple days with the windows down on the freeway to get the smell out, and i mean there was ash and all that grossness everywhere.

Seriously, airing it out and perhaps treating with saddle soap and then Lexol should help.

Stick it in a bag with a battery operated air ionizer, leave ionizer on all day. If I remember correctly I saw that in an older thread about removing smoke smell from an instrument and case sometime last year.
