i was on youtube the other day watching jimi hendrix's voodoo child at woodstock from 1969 and there were quite a few comments saying "he aint that good" or "metallica is way better" or "i can do that" and the best one "hes just a total pot-head" then i was watching another one of my favorite groups the beatles on you tube and there were so many people going on and on about how lame they are. there is a difference between liking someones music and respecting that music, the beatles changed music in a huge way and opened the door for the british invasion when so many greats started out and hendrix was (and still is) the best guitar player ever he was way ahead of his time he bridged the gap from the beatles to black sabbath or iron madien. im NOT saying metallica isnt awesome cause they are awesome so metalheads relax. what i am saying is had it not been for jimi or the beatles among others who knows what music would be like today. please people you dont have to be a fan of older music but please at least respect it, relize what it has done for what we all love and most of all give credit when credit is due, thank you

When my younger son was 13, he told me "everything you like sucks!"

He's 15 now, and he likes a bunch of classic rock. A couple of months ago he downloaded many hours worth of Grateful Dead music. The worm has turned!

So there is hope.

Saying Hendrix is the George Washington of rock shows the same lack of perspective as someone saying that Metallica is better.

But, honestly, your first mistake was actually reading the comments on YouTube.

When I was younger I thought the Beatles and the Beach Boys "sucked" -- now I own tons of their stuff (on vinyl of all things). Often for younger people (and many older!), what music you listen to is a huge part of your identity - and because of that, you make choices and decisions that are ideologically colored or based on image rather than appreciating music on its own terms or understanding its place in history.

Oh, and many people think "x sucks" is an appropriate way to say "I don't care for x". This is prevalent outside of music too and is the cause of many misunderstandings.

Young pups will always come up & disrespect the previous generation's *greats*
It will, in turn, also happen to them & theirs.
A small minority will *get it* before they're too old & crusty to use the info to their benefit.
Wanting this to change is understandable; expending any effort to enighten said pups is IMO wasted.

If you don't quote who you are responding to, your replies have no context. What are you talking about?

If it'll make you feel any better, I'm 17, and I had memorized the entire Beatles catalog* before I'd even HEARD of, say, Blink-182 or Linkin Park. Recently, though, I've been attempting to expand my taste, so I do listen to them now.

* also Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones

My son is 13. He has Sabbath w/Ozzy, Alice Cooper, John Entwistle, amongst others on his Ipod. He, in turn, has made me a fan of his generation's version of Heart: Aly and AJ/78Violet.

Beatles, Hendrix, Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica... all changed music in great ways!
I agree 100% with your original post. God I wish more musicians and fans would understand Hendrix. It would make our world BETTER. He was the epitome of emotion, expression, freedom, power, etc, etc. Beatles wrote the best melodies EVER. What good is a song if it can't be sung or hummed? I think MTV made music too visual and people began not LISTENING. I love my Ipod to death, but sometimes I like to pull out a record or cassette and just sit and listen.

I agree.

LINER NOTES! With all of the music downloads these days people are missing out on the true intimacy of getting to know an artist. I'm 50, and used to look forward to buying an album and putting on side one and read the liner notes as I listened to the whole album, not just the hit single.

I'll stop rambling now!
