Respect for you P&W bassists

In my previous life I was a percussionist, and still do that gig sometimes...
This week for the High Holy Days I was asked to take a lead role in drumming for the service. Other people of various skill levels were also encouraged to participate - nice and inclusive.
Normally, for me, "if you're not part of the groove, you're part of the problem".
But in a P&W setting, heart and your intent are definitely a part of it. So normally, if people were killing the groove, and I was in a leadership role, they'd be out! But here, there were people who were really trying from their heart and soul to contribute, even if they weren't helping the groove any with their contribution.
And I had to reconcile the part of my brain that was going "ugh, make them stop, save the groove!" and the part saying "hey, it's for Him, and that's what's important".
Realize that you many of you P&W bassists deal with this conflict between skill and participation a lot, and I wanted to give you respect for managing it.

It IS a conflict! (sometimes) But, I have to focus on why I'm there - rather than who else is there with me.

P&W is the hardest gig that I have ever had. You REALLY have to pay attention to what the song is calling for and where the song might end up.
