Returned my bass today

Sign in to disble this ad
Today should have been the happiest day of my life (so far), but it's not. I returned my Carvin bass. After waiting 6 weeks for it arrive, I decided to return it. As a beginner, I couldn't justify spending $830 for a bass guitar. It was the hardest decision I've had to make. Maybe someday if I get good enough to play in a band I'll get another one. Until then, I'll stick with my Squier.

Ya I know what you mean, I remember sleepless night worrying about if I should have gone and pulled the trigger on one purchase or another. Figure it this way, Besides getting to be a better bass player, and NOT having to sorry so much about hurting your baby, you know what you want to award yourself with when you think the time is right. Just keep grooving and enjoy.

A lot more players got good with lower-end instruments than ever got good BY buying high-end instruments.

It's not the tool, it's the player. Good for you.

I am sorry to hear about your decision. I have found that with new and better equipment I practice more. I switch basses, fiddle with my amp or swap amps. But I do practice more and learn new things. I can try new techniques and find that one will let me play it better. If pure skill was required to own a "boutique" probably half of them made would never get sold.

Eh, $830 when you're not at the level of playing out yet - I'd say it's a good decision. But, having a nice axe that your hands want to get on makes a huge difference. At the same time, I've had that experience from well set up MIM Fenders to MTDs.

Ever consider a used upgrade of some sort, or something in a better price range? If the Squier isn't rocking you anymore - maybe toss it back and eat a hit of a couple hundo on top of it.

Never understood the mentality of "not being good enough to own something". If you want it, and have the bones to spare, then spend it.

You know, the funny thing is, is that I really like my Squier. I know that alot of people on here don't like them but I like mine. Even my former instructor played it and really liked it. I don't even really know why I got the Carvin in the first place. I guess I liked that you could custom build them.

If the funds were available would you not buy a 'Vette or a Porsche or Ferrari because you were not a world class racing driver?

Yea, I understand your side too. However, I don't really have the best job in the world and $830 is alot of money. Why spend it to buy a bass when I already have a very functional bass, in my opinion. Besides, that money could go to get a nice amp, and I'd still have money left over.

If you can afford it go for it! You only live once and there are no rules.

My first amp was a 350w Laney R4H with the matching 4x10 cab. Way overkill, and I had to by a Roland Basscube 100 coz I got sick of lugging the Laney around. Never the less, I dont regret it!

I am a novice player and have tons of wicked gear. It all gets me excited and play more becuase of it.

The only people to to dis you will be experienced players who don't have the cash flow to keep up. lol

Be free and embrace your GAS.

Just curious...but why did you decide "now" that you didn't want to spend that kind of money on a bass? Shouldn't you have figured that out before you ordered it?

Quality is the important thing with a bass rather than price. If your Squier is set up well, has a straight neck and you like it, that's the main thing.

That's a good question EagleMoon......I was having doubts the day after I ordered it. I kept going back and forth in my mind. I was visiting the Carvin site every day and just staring at the bass. I REALLY WANTED IT. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized it was a mistake. I just made the decision that I thought was best for me and my finances.
Oh I understand that. I was just curious. How was the bass though, once you got it? Nice?

You didn't say that you needed a good amp. That changes everything. Keep the Squier and get a good amp then.

Oh man the bass was gorgeous. Classic sunburst, ebony fret-board, sunburst headstock, black hardware. It was a tough decision.

Squires are fine basses. Don't knock 'em. Japanese Squires from the 80s are getting bigger and bigger bucks over the years. Plus, every bass is different. You could have two basses, same year, same make, same model and out of the same production plant and they will be totally different. If you have a bass you like stick with it and practice, practice, practice. You'll know when you outgrow the bass. The biggest problem with getting the Carvin now is that you probably don't know what your style is yet, so there's no way of knowing if the Carvin is the right bass for you. I say save your money and put it into lessons and music books and practice. When you get to the point when you know exactly what it is that your Squire *doesn't* do then you'll know what to look for next. Also...you might keep that Squire forever. I've had basses that I bought for less than $500 that were waaaaay better sounding and better to play (for me) than high end custom basses. After 20 years I've realized that all I need is a Fender P bass, a chord, flatwound strings, and a simple amp and I'm happy as a clam. If I got a $5,000 custom bass with tons of features as a gift I'd probably let it sit in it's case or sell it. It's just not my thing. Do your thing and don't judge a bass by the sticker on the headstock...judge it on how it feels to you.

Times are tough and the economy sucks something fierce, so I understand your conflict man.

"After waiting 6 weeks for it arrive, I decided to return it."

Did you at least give it a go before it was returned?

*Edit*
Folks were quicker on the draw on this question ... Maybe this bass will be in the cards for you in the future
