Call me an ol fuddy-duddy, but I've seen a few too many references to contemporary music as FUNK and I honestly have to disagree whole-heartedly!!! Funky, sure anyone can be funky but The Funk, not so much... |

Then Keidis went and thought himself "deep and profound" and along came Under the Bridge and that tripe. Been on a downhill slide since uplift mofo party plan, but Mother's Milk had its share of brilliance, as did BSSM.
Funky Crime: that is funk.
Californication; not on your life.

Now, if other kids my age knew who Jamiroquai, the RH Factor, etc., were, maybe we'd have a better chance. Sadly, you're average 18-25 year old doesn't know who Parliament is.
IMHO.

Worth, TX.
I like these guys. We opened for them back in the late 80s and they were sure Punk Rock with Funk overtones. They're funky like Hendrix was, they "keep the Rock Funky and the Funk Rockin'" to paraphrase Michael Jackson.
Now, let's get kids off the MPC samplers and turntables and back on instruments like my new Fave Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner and we'll get these youngsters groovin' to the Real Deal.... |

Whomever that was, please take credit - I think it sums it up. |

I'd not want to disagree with him on funk.... |

Funky Crime: that is funk.
Californication; not on your life. | "Funky Crime" is sorta funky, but if that's as funky as they get, well... they ain't a funky band by a long shot. Funk really has a subtlety to it that I've never really heard in the RHCP. Not funky, but some really great stuff that doesn't happen to be funky.
I've heard this argument over and over... They're a damn fine rock band with some great songs. That's where I leave it. |

Full disclosure, I don't consider myself to be "The Funk" even if I'm copping Larry Graham note for note.. I do consider the Sly album "Fresh" to be the pinnacle of Funk as well as "Back on the Right Track", some Ohio Players, some Funkadelic, some excerpts of P-Funk... I've heard of plenty funky music from RHCP to Michael Jackson that was funky like a bow-legged monkey, but still not THE FUNK.. |

Pivotal album for them, defined them better than any other, imo.
