Question Rhythm types

Sign in to disble this ad
Currently, the only sort of style of rhythm I know is an isorhythm, which is a repeated rhythm using different notes, to my knowledge. I would love to know more rhythm types, and was wondering if anyone felt like sharing the names and descriptions of any?

Note: I don't know what it would be called rather than style of rhythm, so forgive my earlier phrasing.

Thank you!
~Casey

Ostinato- A motif, phrase or theme repeated over & over at the same pitch level.
They can be found from Stravinsky's "The Rite Of Spring" to Chicago's "25 Or 6 To 4".

Afro-Cuban & various Latin music have many rhythms with an associated feel...Samba, Bossa Nova, Merengue, etc.
If you're asked to play a Samba...know the rhythm so you can pull it off/fake it.

Tumbaos & Claves are other terms you should know.

What you seek could be generalized as; Polyrhythms. Here are some links that come up searching 'Polyrhythms". I searched Google. Your favorite search site might produce other results. Hope that helps, 8-)
