The bass sounds like is has the damper on, and two socks shoved under the strings.

^^^ That's a great theme - I used to love the opening titles for that show.

I was surprised how much this news upset me earlier today. I was actually quite tearful.

Maybe it's because some of his stuff brings back such haunting memories for me. That theme to "Midnight Cowboy" is so simple, yet one of the most beautiful melodies I know. Here's a better audio version than the YouTube link:

I'm also a little surprised that the passing of such a giant in the music world hasn't had a few more comments here today. Oh well, maybe other folks don't see this the same way I do.

A loss that's for sure. Great composer - he had a gift for the majestic. Radio 4's news slot earlier played a snippet of 'Born Free' which could almost slot into a Connery-era Bond film.

But! Don't forget The John Barry Seven...

I don't think too many people know who he is by name. I didn't until I saw it in the newspaper.

That's really a shame. Barry was the first film composer I was aware of by name. Like many others, I was introduced to his work via the numerous James Bond films he scored over the years. I saw the Moviola documentary on television years ago and remember Barry coming across as a cool fellow.
