RIP Long John Baldry

British blues-rocker Long John Baldry died July 21 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

I always loved his tune "Don't Try to Lay No Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll," especially because of its prelude, a story called "Conditional Discharge."

He did some cool variations on that story when I saw him play live. The recorded version is a classic though, for sure.

I used to do a late-night show on a college radio station many years ago, and sometimes I would play it. Even at times when I'd think no one could possibly be listening at, like, 2:30 A.M., "Conditional Discharge" would often bring in a phone call or two from people wanting to know who and what it was.
