Rock or Blues?

Should I learn rock or the blues? or both? I'm setting a goal on my guitar and I want to know which way to flow?

If you learn blues, then you'll inevitably learn rock. The two are intimately tied and related to each other.

I'd cut a path right down the middle in the style of SRV, Allman Brothers, Clapton, Hendrix and countless others. I saw a fantastic article on learning the blues in a recent companion to BP magazine - I think there were 15 short examples that gave a great overview to the blues that I would like to use with students if I ever get back into teaching. Combine something like that with learning to play strightahead eighth notes (well - many people do not) as well as riff-based playing and you'll be right on target...

I believe that you should concentrate on music that speaks to you, without any regard for categorization.

(If you liked a tune that wasn't categorized "correctly", would you no longer enjoy it?)

Both! That's what I am doing, but then I play with guys who like doing both on guitar and they are my two favorite genres. At the risk of offending a few folks, playing blues is easier. Rock is a much wider category and there are many songs that you just have to learn explicitly, where in blues there is more of a formula and variations. To play blues very well is not easy, but to learn enough to be able to provide a bass line to almost any song given the key and description (like "This one is a shuffle in D with a fast four; it starts on the five but you don't come in until the one") is not all that hard.

+1...I would say if you have a good foundation of blues you could play any number of styles from there...

Peace,
