I did not hear any rock music on tonight's Grammy Award Show.
Yeah, Bon Jovi did Livin' On A Prayer, but they did it in a watered-down pop style.
The closest thing to rock was the drummer on that horrible gangsta rap thing at about 11:10 PM.
I think The Kings of Leon won something, but I consider them to be a pop band, not a rock band. Green Day won something, but they haven't done rock in years - now they do glam pop (heavy on the eyeliner). I think the lead singer and Lady Ga Ga go to the same beauty parlor in mid-town Manhattan.
But, there was a commercial for a Fender Stratocaster cell phone which has the 3 pups and eveything. Eric Clapton did the commercial - he was talking on the phone and simulataneously strumming Layla on it!

One day it will explode on top again! |

It seems like today's teens are into mostly into Country/pop (Keith Urban, Taylor Swift), Glam pop (Lady GaGa, Kesha, Tin-Tin), white style R&B pop (Rhianna, Beonce) and gangsta rap.
Its a shame that a brilliant young lead guitar player like Orianthi comes out at a time when rock is no longer popular with kids and neither are lead guitar solos (or any kind of musical solos). I think the TV videos and YouTube have something to do this with.

I don`t think rock is dying out, rather, the media is just trying to convince us that it is. The people actually going out to see shows want to hear classics as well as rocking originals - not this modern pop stuff.
As always, YMMV. |

This is timely for me as I just got home from my first practice with a new rock trio we just put together. We all had plenty of ideas for songs that date back 20-30 years: Trower, Travers, Montrose, Rush, Hendrix, SRV, but when it came to anything newer or new. We were all stumped. Nothing really stacks up, especially anything that allows for some freedom of expression or room to venture out. It's all formula music based on focus groups and corporate sales numbers..........Damn sounds like I'm starting to rant....Oh Well the rehearsal went well so that's cool ! ! |

I want metal to get big again.

I'm 18 years old, and too many of my friends know classics, truly great rock songs, from playing it on Expert on Rockband. It's pathetic. It saddens me that kids would rather pick up a glorified video game controller and pretend to play, than to actually pick up a stringed instrument and put some effort into it. Really very sad.
I will speak up: I LOVE classic rock, Detroit-era Motown (being from Motown myself), and all of that. British Invasion, California sound and Motown. It's all good. I thank my Dad for listening to that stuff as I grew up. Really I do, because I'm afraid otherwise I'd be playing in some crappy punk band.
Also, acts like Daughtry, Nickelback and Hoobastank (yes, IMMENSELY popular and making more money than I'll ever know; irrelevant) are destroying the rock sound. They sing gritty vocals, play heavily-distorted guitars and claim the name "rocker."
But there's not much I can do. The times they are a-changin'. And all I can do is blast my Boston, Chicago, Beach Boys, etc.. as I watch my friends listen to and emulate crappy, talentless, overpaid "actors" playing what they think is rock.
Sorry, rant over.

You're getting requests to play old rock, not new/current rock.
Sure, there are rock bands out there whose members are under 30 and who are recording original music, but they are going nowhere as far as "success" goes. People are not paying money for it.
And, I think for a very long time there will be musicans playing rock, but it will be rock music written from like 1956 to what? - 2000? They won't be playing rock written from like 2001 on becuase trhey won't b able to find any recordings. Eventually, songwriters will stop writing rock songs because there will be no money in it.

I saw them here in Michigan a few months back, and they didn't sell out the Palace of Auburn Hills. There were a few sections that were pretty empty in the nosebleeds, and the tickets were sold for less than half of face value in a promotion by Ticketmaster. This could just be from the horrible economy of this state though.
However, I will say that it's not dead, it's just sleeping. It shall awaken some day and it's underground dreams will become reality again... the sooner, the better. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
