Here's the unit:

Don't ask why I'm interested ... I just have one question for you more tech-savvy people out there. I know these bass pedals drive a MIDI set-up. But does that mean you need a synth or the like between them and an amp? Or can you play them directly into an amp?

Probably a stupid question, I know, but help me out.

It's a MIDI controller and nothing else. You'll need a synth of some sort in between that and the amp.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Any suggestions for something extremely compact? I don't even need a keyboard, I'm just interested in bass pedals.

A Dave Smith Mopho would probably work.

A small unit like the Roland SH-32 is ideal, it is compact, has great sounds, and is inexpensive (less than the pedals). The Roland PKs are pretty much the de factor MIDI controller for Rush cover bands everywhere.
