Roland Workstation... anyone know them?

OK Our guitarist, who takes care of sequencing our cover songs when we need to, is a moron. I keep telling him its so gay when theres a break, and we're all standing there while the synth is playing. I was thinking about buying an external MIDI controller and using it with an effect from the workstation to play a part on the songs when I'm not playing bass... would that work? A MIDI controller can be used as kind of a "remote control" to the main workstation to play its effects right?
