Rolling Stone Magazine Top 10 songs of all time http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036789/...74786#37374786
Most of these songs would certainly not be my picks. There are only 4 that would get my vote as Top 10. What do you think about this list? |

| | | | Like a Rolling Stone as #1? I sure don't get that one. Is it just a coincidence that Like A Rolling Stone is #1 and The Rolling Stones are #2 in a poll by Rolling Stone Magazine? |

It's sort of like a girl with an acoustic guitar singing folk songs. Just no need for that Cuum by ya crap. But it does sell some guitars. |

Subjective subjects like "all time top ten" do nothing more than divide people into two groups - then unite them (hopefully). The first two groups being those who agree and those who disagree. The third (hopeful) group, those who subscribe/tune in.
So when anyone post a topic that includes the phrases, "The best", "The Top", "The Worst", etc... they are not seeking to quantify anything. They are simply hoping to provoke dialogue.
Listening to the feeble justifications for each song and why it's on the list is almost painful as you hear each explanation nullify the previous...

It's not really a rock & roll list is it? It's more 10 Influential Songs of the Rock & Roll Era.
No Little Richard? I would've put him there in place of Ray Charles and/or Chuck Berry.
No Rock Around The Clock?
Marvin Gaye is one of my 3 favorite singers. What's Going On is the representative for the protest era? Okay, I guess... God Save The Queen by The Sex Pistols? IMO more important/influential than Nirvana. Imagine is a lovely song. I do think it's a bit overrated due to John's murder. If he were still alive I don't think it would make the list.

The way I see things, there are two types of songs - ones that, for whatever reason, were different that those that went before and influenced the songs that followed - and the songs that followed.
Using what we, as the listening public, were 'permitted to hear' and what's on the record (no pun intended), this sort of list is not impossible to compile. Whether or not it accurately reflects the music that was actually available, however, is seriously questionable and the simple fact that 'race music' broke through in at a time when people weren't even ready to accept people "of color" as equal, speaks VOLUMES about who music like jazz, blues and rock and roll's genuine innovators and influential elite actually were.
However, what's on record won't accurately reflect who and what kind of music was being created at any point during R 'n R's formative years. So the ability to really see who and what influenced R 'n R - and all other forms of modern popular music is almost impossible.

| | | I realize lists such as these are designed to stir up discussion and sell/drive magazines/web hits, etc., but I hate them. There is no legitimate way to make such a list, really--the list is made from and devolves from the selection criteria, which is outcome-determinative. Is a song "better" because it sells the most copies/downloads, causes the most riots, is most danceable, is most counter-culture, is most remembered today, ad infinitum, ad nauseum? I would rather debate the selection criteria, which itself is ultimately an invitation to struggle. And this list purports to name best "Songs", not even pop/rock songs, of all time. Really? And "Rhapsody in Blue" by Gershwin isn't on the list, 20 minutes of revolutionary compositon if there ever was one? RS should have been honest and said this was a list of the best "pop/rock" songs of all time....
I think the best pop/rock song ever was "Let's Get Physical" by Olivia Neutron Bomb. So there....

MY list might have had 3 songs in common with Rolling Stones's list. That doesn't make Rolling Stone's list wrong, it just makes it THEIR list.

I think it is also interesting, as Jim Roberts pointed out in his book, How the Fender Bass Changed the World, how important the electric bass is in all of this.

There's nothing wrong with discussing how Chuck Berry or Elvis impacted modern music. But elevating one over the other for the sake of some sort of "winner" or other adversarial concept diminishes the point to nothing more than a 'p-ing' match.
The debates that tend to come from such things rarely produce worthwhile information.

1. Hallowed be thy Name - Iron Maiden
2. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
3. Life's Shadow - Beckett
4. Love to Love - UFO
5. Fountain of Lamneth - Rush
6. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
7. Spiral Architect - Black Sabbath
8. Emerald - Thin Lizzy
9. Master of Puppets - Metallica
10. You Could be Mine - Guns 'n Roses
That's quite subjective, but hey, if you put me in charge of Rolling Stone and said "give us a best songs ever issue" it'd look a bit like that.
