Rondo Short Scale bass case for Mustang ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've searched this topic repeatedly looking for case and gig bag alternatives to Fender's $150 case for the Mustang bass. Has anyone with a Mustang or Musicmaster tried the Rondo short scale bass case? It's $49 as opposed to the Fender $149 case so I'd like to know...

It says in the ad that the case fits but I've seen elsewhere in the forum that someone said the Rondo short scale bass gig bag did not fit the Mustang so I'd like to know before ordering. I have another Rondo case for one of my guitars and the quality is fairly poor (defect in vinyl cover and the latches are a bit sloppy) I understand that but if it won't fit I don't want to go to the hassle or shipping it back since paying for shipping both ways nearly equals the cost of the case.

Dude you heard it said before you get what you pay for. But in this economy I can understand trying to save a buck.I have bout fender cases at G C for under 150. About 130 but the gator case is not too bad for 90 bucks and you are going half way in price with it. I have one and several Fenders they are real good. I also love my Reunion Blues gig bag better than all of them specially for airplane travel. Good luck amigo

I think the question was about fit.....not quality. I bought a Squier Jag short scale a few weeks back, and finding a bag that fits ain't easy!!

I've owned a great Reunion Blues leather bag for thirty years and it's been great for my long scales, but it makes no sense to put a $160 bass in a $400 bag. Wouldn't be a good fit anyway.

If anybody has a lead on a reasonable bag that'll fit a Jag SS, let me know.

You should be able to get a case locally cheaper than that. Plus you can see if it fits in the store.

I contacted the Renuion blues guy, Cronkhite, and he doesn't have a pattern for a Fender Mustang so he'd need me to do a full size tracing, etc. After I do the tracing and measurements for the bridge I send it to him and he will generate a pattern. I went through this with a custom bag maker for a Chapman Stick 8 years ago and it didn't turn out great. I had to send bags back that didn't fit. A bit of a pain.

A cordura bag from Cronkhite would be $285, leather would be $375. He didn't specify whether shipping would be extra.

I've called all the local guitar stores and none even carry a Mustang bass, much less the case or bags for short scales. I never imagined short scale basses were such a rarity before ordering the Mustang.

I've seen other recommendations that a gig bag for a Gibson ES-335 guitar will fit the length but the lower bout will be 3-4 inches too wide. I don't think that's a good solution either.

The Rondo case says interior dimension is 43" and the Mustang is 42.5 not counting the strap button. I don't know whether their case dimension is from padding to padding or the box dimension.

I really want a gig bag rather than the case but spending half the cost of a bass on a custom gig bag, even a nice one, seems more than stupid.

I have a Rondo/Douglas short scale hardshell case. It is fairly rugged and keeps the bass safe. BUT...Then again it is not my main gigging bass, so I cannot tell you how it would do in a situation where it is constantly knocked about or has other bags and cases sitting on top of it.

I'd check with Gator before I went to Rondo. I like Gator's cases a lot.

I use these cases with free shipping and put pieces of computer box foam inside next to the bass body cutouts to keep them from sliding around. My worst-looking case has seen 260 gigs BUT the bass cases are handled by me and bandmates NOT roadies tossing everything into the back of a truck or trailer as fast as they can. The most recent 2 are lighter(weight-wise) than the 2007 versions.

If you want better, get an ATA case. Kaint see paying as much for a case as I do for some of the beater basses I use.

As far as FIT for a gigbag, your best bet is to go to a LARGE store and try them.

I use the Rondo short scale hard case for my Mustang RI. It fits fine. Quality is not perfect but absolutely adequate for light gigging, trunk of car etc.

I have a Guardian GC 90 short scale bass gig bag for my Mustang. It's basic, but is sturdy. Make sure you select "short scale bass" from the drop down menu before ordering.
Case : Guardian CG 90 Series DuraGuard Gig Bags : D.C. Piano Company
