The cheapest strings out there that I know of are sold by Carvin. Their steel and nickel strings are made by LaBella, too, I believe. I could be wrong, and someone will probably correct me. I know that they aren't made by Carvin; Carvin just repackages them. While there's more string makers these days then there were 10 or 20 years ago, there's still only a relative few of them. Lots of other companies repackage strings and call them their own.
As far as other gear goes, I'm clueless. Isn't a Lakland jazz just a repackaged MIM Fender Jazz? I can't tell the difference!
