Harry Warren - I'll bet there are very few days that go by that you don't hear one of his songs. Google him, you'll be surprised.
Robert Russell Bennett - Actually orchestrated the Broadway shows that Richard Rodgers composed. He was/is very infulential in the sound of theatrical music.
Don Ellis - Popular for a big band jazz/rock musician in his lifetime. Ground breaking work in odd time signatures. He's known, but not as revered as I think he should be.
Gil Evans - Jazz composer and arranger.

Definitely agree with most of the list, though, especially #2. I can't believe how many people who claim to be rockers, have never heard of the Replacements. They, along with Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. on that list, influenced pretty much everyone from the grunge era (Nirvana) and on.

I don't get why Tom Petty is on that list though. He gets tons of recognition - I can't go a day without hearing something of his, it seems.
Cool to see Fugazi on the list! |

They get plenty of appreciation, though I guess it depends on what appreciation is. I also don't see why the Cars should be up there, they had that one album but not much else worth listening to. I suppose Cheap Trick gets passed over in some ways, but I wouldn't call them underappreciated. I also think Wilco, Devo and Ween get just the right amount of appreciation.
Definitely good call on the Band, though, they deserve to be #1. I love Tom Waits, but the Band's catalog deserves to be blared across college campus just like Dylan and the Dead are, because they are without a doubt a great band that can never get enough praise. Tom Waits is amazing, but a little idiosyncratic. Also, you can't have Tom Waits on a list without Nick Cave on there somewhere.
I also agree with Jeff Buckley.

Jeff should be #1. I still listen to his stuff all the time. I still say he has the most BEAUTIFUL Male Voice of any rock vocalist. His range and tone were impeccable. Even on his Live stuff.
That list doesn't have any Jazz, R&B, or Classical artists. I think all three of those genre's have a lot more underappreciated artists than Rock. IMHO as always. |

robert wyatt- i made hendrix and barrett sound BETTER, and no one knows who the heck i am.
the birthday party- i just wish nick cave wouldn't have ruined it with a project called the bad seeds.
captain beefheart- for writing harry/irene.
joe jackson- not the "jackson five rearing/wife beating with shoe" one either. |

I'd also remove Alice Cooper. Everyone I know knows him and likes at least one tune.
I'd add ABBA. I bet they have more fans that don't care to admit it.
I'd add KISS, just for the slagging Gene alone cops on here sometimes...
And I would probably add Morbid Angel too. IMO this is a band that helped shape progressive and dark metal, yet barely gets a mention around my parts or on TB, it's all Deicide this or Metallica that sic ad nauseum
And I often wonder why noone mentions Suzi Quattro around here? She played bass and sung, slung some good tunes IMO, but I don't see much discussion on her.
I'd be interested to see an overrated list if one exists, and I've added these bands to my binge list the next time I'm checking out new music

Uhm what was the point of your post? I mean were you saying that these bands are underrated? Because saying "Who" means you don't know who they are... so they might be underrated to you. You can't properly rate a band you've never heard.
Glad to see Devo on that list, they are so much more than "Whip It."

i think that there are a fea rap artists that are mor eoverlooked than the pharcyde as well....heirglyphics, del, immortal technique, blackalicious, etc...
as far as more recent bands i think dredg is a band that dosnt get nearly as much rcognition as they should "el cielo" and "catch without arms" are both phenominal and very marketable albums that never made the big splash they should have....imo of course.
