Which of the two parts to Cygnus X-1 is your favorite?
Cygnus X-1 Book I on A Farewell to Kings, or Cygnus X-1 Book II on Hemispheres?
I personaly like Cygnus Book I. I love the bass and it's a truly perfect song to finish the album up with. What do you guys think? |

Book II does NOT start at that moment...the character appears halfway through Book II, as the battle is happening between the two gods. Before that, it introduces both sides of the conflict, then a war, and he just falls out of the Hole, and then the battle ends, and they're all happy and fantastic.
I think that there is a pretty huge diffrence in the sound and the style change between the two parts. Cygnus Book I is reflective to the "Farewell to Kings" sound, and Part II does the same with "Hemispheres". I just think it's a really huge leap from two albums connected by this song and I think it's intresting which part people prefer. |

It took me close to a year to play it on guitar(1/2 ass, of course), and I'm trying to learn it on bass now, also 1/2 ass. I'll tell you all one thing - if you want to get good on your instrument, learn Book 2!

I'm afraid Hemispheres doesn't do much for me, it doesn't have enough variation or development to sustain it's length IMHO.
I know that's a pretty blasphemous thing for a Rush nut to say, but..!

Book I is way more of a prog metal song than Book II, and that bass riff in the intro is so evil and heavy. Book II is a more proggy tune and has longer passages that appeal to me. I also like the bass line from Book II better. And that stereo soundscape thing they did on Hemispheres with that swoosh effect and the "single perfect sphere" line across left and right channels is great.
But I think Book I has to win because it's got the greatest Geddy scream ever in it. For everyone who hates Rush just because they don't like Geddy's voice, that's got to be tough to take. But for those of us who appreciate it, that's one of the greatest recordings in rock and roll history.
