Roll the bones would be a great one.

Spirit of the radio would be a great one, minus the intro since its very challenging to play.

Red Barchetta would also be pretty easy to learn I think, its stays pretty constant.

Limelight is pretty easy to play, but once the guitar solo starts it may get a bit busy/challenging, but as far as most of the song goes it'll suit you fine.

Hope i've helped, if you have any questions about learning any of the above songs or a couple others, just shoot me a pm. good luck!

You have the book :P Learn it all! haha

2112 is a good one to start.
If you're up for the challenge, learn YYZ.
I just realized going to college how technical YYZ is. it's all scales!!!

"bravado" from roll the bones. it's simple and tasteful. this is geddy at his simplest. it gets more difficult from here. jeff

Cool

maybe i should make a poll from these great suggested songs? what do yall think? these are all excellent songs. i want to play em all, eventually. when i learn a song i stay with it until i am satisfied with it. i try to get the tone and play it just like it sounds on the cd. i am also a note for note player, no shortcuts, no tab. thanks again.

O.k. it's hard but, La Villa Strangiato. That would give you a challenge. I learned it (by ear, sans solo) after about one year's worth of playing (a long time ago). There are also some very cool tunes on 'Hold Your Fire'. Good luck. My first band played nothing but Rush and Black Sabbath tunes. It kicked my ass but I'm better for it.

Gee, Geezer and Geddy...Good God. Two great players to start on. It only goes up from there. I had (still do) a lot of fun playing those tunes. That really whipped me into shape! That song 'Force Ten' from "Hold Your Fire" is really cool. Check it out.

IMHO, for a challenge, Limelight would be perfect. It's not too complex nor too easy. It was actually one of the first Rush songs I learned and it grooves.

The intro to Force Ten would be really tough for a beginner to get up to speed and sounding smooth and consistent imo. I really don't think any of the basslines on Hold Your Fire are good for a beginner. They're Geddy's best (along with Power Windows), but they're trickier than most!

I'm working on Freewill note for note right now. That solo is a workout!
