A band that has been rolling along for more than 30 years, sold millions of units, still packs them in on tour, has influenced millions of musicians (many that ARE ALREADY in the HOF?!?).
The fat cats dont get it, and frankly I dont think RUSH care too much. It's laughable some of the pop, disco, dance, rap flashes in the pan that have been inducted that personally have NOTHING TO DO WITH Rock and Roll! As Geddy said last year ABBA KICKS ASS! lol |

The washing machine on stage is something.
I can really understand their mixed feelings on not really wanting to be part of the R&R HOF 'circus'
And everytime time I see Alex Lifeson now, the only things that come to my mind are 'Trailer Park Boys' scenes.
Hope that i will finally get a chance to see those guys live someday! |

It is storied that one of the board members offered up Bruce Springsteen, and the owner asked "do YOU like him?", to which the answer was "me?... not really.." and the owner responded with "Well, that settles it then."
The RRHOF is a private toy that has no meaning or credibility within the industry. it's sole purpose is to make the owner feel important and use up a few minutes of airtime on celebrity worship shows. They don't have a clue, you say?... well there isn't a clue to be had, nor is there any interest in finding one.

Great idea - or so I thought. Over the years, I have figured out that your post is spot on.
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts!?!?! Look, nothing against her...but REALLY!?!?!
We can all name band after band after band who deserves consideration LONG before she does....so I guess (bottom line) that it is true. The voters for the RRHOF are, indeed, higher than kites....

My band just finished an album in a studio in NYC, and while I was there one of the guys showed me a new Joan Jett song. I was surprised we were using the same studio.

Not that I have a problem with ABBA, they are famous after all, but it should really be called the "Popular Music for The In-Crowd Hall of Fame" instead of rock and roll.
ETA: I saw Joan Jett and the Black Hearts at an outdoor concert in Virginia about two years ago and she put on a killer show, pretty old school rock, so good for her.

I kinda remember some complains from folks about that.

However, if you are going to use that as a watermark...why the hell isn't John Kay and Steppenwolf there?? 17 albums - 6 number 1 hits - some of the most prolific rock songs ever penned...who here isn't sick to death of hearing "Born to be Wild" "Magic Carpet Ride" or "The Pusher"??
What I'm saying here, is that if mere album sales are the chief indicator of who gets in and who doesn't, then I understand ABBA getting in. If, however, there is a more critical look at how musicians changed the face of rock and (sometimes) cultural morays during highly charged times - Think Elvis Presley, Little Richard - then I ask again - where the hell is JK and Steppenwolf??
I tend to agree that the RRHOF is all about the tourists......not about the history of ROCK.

I've been to the Rock Hall many times, including opening weekend (still have the commemorative shirt lol). I really like looking at the old gear, the old recording studio setup, and the handwritten lyrics on napkins, notebook paper, etc. It's a very well made museum with lots of different artifacts, but the premise is weird. For instance, why should someone be inducted into both the Country Music hall of fame AND the RRHOF? Same with hip hop groups. I'm not denying that Grandmaster Flash pretty much started rap, but he technically isn't rock and roll. But again, that depends on your definition of rock and roll... maybe they should re-name it the Music Hall of Fame and Museum?

On topic, screw the RRHOF. I don't need some self-declared HOF to validate the bands I like.

Think you are over generalizing..have you been to RUSH concert lately ?? you have people from 15 to 60..so If I'm a rush fan and all the 60,000 that saw them in Brazil...must be a lot of NERDS out there...And I don't consider myself a Nerd.
my 2 cents worth | Despite the fact that you are using statistical data to back up your argument I don't consider you a nerd either.
I also suspect that we define the term "nerd" somewhat differently. But that's a whole other thread, and not a very interesting one. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
