Jack Bruce has been quoted saying, "...the electric guitar is kind of a bastard instrument..."

Discuss.

Jack's take on this is actually pretty mild

Andres Segovia is on record as referring to the electric guitar as "an abomination"

I have trouble discussing Jack's comment totally out of context. And because there's no reference for the quote (or alleged qoute perhaps), I can't find the context.

Can you amplify this?

John

COOL! Thanks for the link. I remember that interview. OK, the context being that the electric bass in Jack's opinion is a stand-alone instrument. Even though it shares a heritage with the guitar and the double bass, it's a unique instrument. The electric guitar however, in Jack's estimation is an offshoot of the acoustic guitar, not a unique instrument in its own right.

I gotta think this one through now. I appreciate your help, and I certainly didn't mean for my initial response to be snarky in any way.

John

I've always viewed the electric guitar as related to the acoustic guitar but requiring a different approach and mindset when playing. I liken the electric guitar to a piano and an organ or harpsichord: The notes are the same, but you don't "play a piano the same way as an organ."
