I live in Rockford, IL right now. I think I will have the opportunity to relocate to a different state this coming year. I would like to find a place that is bass player friendly. Currently where I live now the scene is horrible (for any musician). There really isn't a whole lot of places to play. If you aren;t already in an established band, the pool of talent is extremely limited. Even finding adequate players in RFD is hard to do. I am not Jaco, but nor am I beginner. I know my instrument and can play it well. I am well above average in regards to my skill as a bass player, I own professional gear, I own a nice PA, I am always on time and prepared. I just want to find a nice steady band to play with who share the same qualities I do. I would try other cities near RFD but breaking into to the Chicago scene is hard since I am a good 1.5 hours away. Milwaukee and Madison are just as far. It is hard to network when you live that far away. I am not moving for music......I will be relocating for a job. However, if faced with a choice I would like to live live in a bass player friendly city where:
1 - The talent pool is full - finding good musicians to play is not a challenge
2 - If you are a good bass player - you will find work
3 - Plenty of places to play
Which place sounds like home to me - San Antonio - Austin - Louisville -

The good thing about that is you're only an hour away from San Antonio in the event you want to gig there for a change. Austin has a great variety of music and they embrace every style. It's also the home of South by Southwest(SXSW) music festival.

(Thanks Carlos - take a night off while I'm in town, why don'tcha? )

Motown? moved/dead
Muscle Shoals? moved/dead, but still some life in pockets
L.A.? Please, do I even need to start on that one?
Philly? Lame club scene, stellar players working for dirt.
NYC? LAMER club scene, intergalactic players working for a chance to just peek at the dirt they're getting in Philly, and all the sessions get covered by the same dozen guys.
Nashville? SUCKS for anything that might be worth listening to, unless you happen to think Shania Twain is music.
'Nola? Washed away and struggling to survive. Again, the best players on earth working for a meal if they are lucky.
If I had to pick a place where music is still a thriving, organic, force in the US, the only place I can even think of is Austin.

It's sort of compounded, since it's a cheap place to live, tons of musicians/bands go to live there when they aren't touring. After their band breaks up or when a member leaves a band, they often just create a new band from the local talent.
Anyways, Austin is a great city.

There are many places to play, but they won't pay you well, or get you many people. I just live hear because I'm 14. After college, I'm out to Nashville. Heck! If I have to, I'll live with my aunt in Memphis. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
