Here's Satch playing the Star Spangled Banner. He's got his signature tone happening. So, what effects makes up that tone?

DiMarzio FRED + Ibanez JS + Wah + flange(?) + Marshall 1/2 stack.

Toss in 10 really talented and practiced fingers and eclectic taste.

Damn he blazed through that.
Could have made it more melodic and drawn out (in a good way).

You don't want to lose peoples attention, either. Had he gone too Jimi Hendrix-y people may have gotten bored; remember he's playing to people at a football? game, not musicians.

Any more on how he gets that tone? Just a wah and flanger? Doesn't sound like that to me, but what do I know.

Interesting.

I never read much about what might go into his tone, but after I posted this thread, I tried to Google on it. Didn't come up with much. But, I found an interview where people at a website submitted questions. It almost looked like he didn't want to answer completely. His answer was "go try a Fulltone octave effect." Cmon now. He might use that sometimes, but that Ain't what people are asking when they ask how he gets his tone.

how much more do you need to know about his tone?
from what i heard in the sample, its not horribly complex, just like it has been said before--DiMarzio FRED + Ibanez JS + Wah + flange(?) + Marshall 1/2 stack...although i didn't hear a flanger, but i was listening to it through laptop speakers with letterman turned up...but yeah, thats it
the only thing i can think of that hasn't been said yet is that he used a pick

I heard no flange on that. Definitely major wah action, though, as other have said. Two things people *haven't* said that I'm pretty sure were there:

Distortion

Delay (slapback sorta) or heavy reverb--sounded a bit more like delay to me though. Maybe a bit of both?

If you listen to the very end, just before he unplugs you can really hear the delay going--then go back and watch it again, and it's there, not very noticeable but just fattening up the sound a bit.

Anyway, cool performance. I love the SF Giants, I wish he'd played the anthem when I was last there

slightly off topic: does anyone remember when Dave Mustaine palyed the Star Spangled Banner on one of MTV's Rock n Jock baseball games.

in both cases, i think it would have helped if they had put a little bit of their talent into the song. Joes version sounded pretty bland.
