Scarcity of Bass Magazines

I can remember when I'd buy the British "Bass Guitar" at my local bookstore and had subscriptions to the American "Bass Guitar" and "Bass Player." The British one is no longer available at that bookstore and of course the other "Bass Guitar" has been defunct for a while. I no longer subscribe to BP because it doesn't have enough hard rock in it. The overall situation compared to the way it used to be pretty much sucks. You'd think that in a world of 7 billion people there would be more bass magazines readily available. I'm sure there are some fine non-English ones out there, but I'm only fluent in English.

In America, consolidation of publishers has ruined a lot of magazines - the Miller Freeman group comes to mind. Long story short, what happened was that these guys used dot-com lingo to take a lot of shareholder money and go on a shopping spree - at one point they owned 141 (!) magazines. Then, one by one, they gutted the editorial staff, stopped paying as much for writers, and tried to transition the magazines to the Internet - and failed miserably. At this point in history, almost all the solid English language magazines and publications are, in fact, from England. Unless, of course, you like Cosmo, Vouge, Esquire, tabloids, and Playboy. Hell, even Time magazine is thinner than it used to be.

Another thing to bear in mind, as far as the American situation is concerned, is the consolidation of retail and distribution of all kinds. It's not only bass magazines, but towels, appliances, movies, you name it - fewer and fewer people are making more and more decisions about more and more stuff. Selection has suffered drastically at all US retailers as a result.

Solution ? Internet. I am thinking of buying a Kindle for no other reason than to take the stuff I find online, put it in a PDF, and read it away from the computer. Seems like a step backwards, considering what the Internet is, but I know of no other solution off-hand.

Recently, I also found www.bassgearmag.com - an upstart bass magazine that published its first issue. They have online and offline subscription options. I hope they keep going...

This does give me a lot of insight on why things are so screwed up. In the case of "Bass Guitar," I was away for months and someone was taking care of my mail. When "Bass Guitar" went out of business, it seems they offered people a subscription to "Guitar World." So when I returned, I already had about 2 or 3 issues of GW I didn't want. Then I ended up receiving about another 12 issues. I tried to give them to a guitarist friend, but she didn't want them; so i threw them away. In the meantime, I even got a call from somebody wanting me to renew my subscription. I think I got the point across that I never wanted Guitar World in the first place.

The magazines that remain are disgraces, like Bass Player, with its utterly, shamelessly whoring gear reviews ("Cons: None") that are effectively nothing but expanded ads for their advertisers and which actually manage to out-puff the ads.

Never mind the total lack of focus -- all bass-like things and styles -- in a slim magazine that has relatively little content other than advertising.

I got a year's subscription for something like $7 just out of curiosity and still feel like it was a burn.

+1000. This is a great magazine and what we've all been looking for. Get it.

Kudos to the team that put it together.

Thank you much! Issue #2 went to the printer last Wednesday, and should be available online soon. We are also revamping our webpage just in time for NAMM. Check out our webpage during the show, as we will be uploading photos and videos daily.

Tom.

P.S.
The webpage is getting some major tweaks this weekend, so check back on Tuesday or so.
