Screaming, Growling, Grunting, Yelling bassists!

So, my band has been wanting some dirty vocals for a while, and since our singer can't really do it, I've decided to try my hand at the real nasty growling type of vocals. My problem is that I don't really have a great deal of variety with it, and I was hoping that there might be others out there who have more experience with this than I who would be willing to share any tips they found. Books, CDs, DvDs, etc.

I also figured this was the best place to post something like this, cause if all else fails, well, at least it failed in OT.

The 'queen of scream' recently bought out a book and dvd about such techniques.

For anyone not familiar with her; she one of the top people in the industry teaching people how to scream in music.

A little more detail. Are you looking for a good Dave Grohl harmonized scream or a deathcore non-distinguishible verbalized low toned "hurah" grunt?

Either way, I highly suggest ALWAYS warming up your vocals. I bought a cheap warm up cd many years ago and it does wonders. It allows me to sing and scream on key (I'm more Dave Grohl-ish).

Without being warmed up, you leave yourself vulnerable to nodes......no bueno.

Best advice, warm up, go for it. Be sure to back off the mic as I can be a good foot behind and still heard easily versus right on the screen for high harmonies.

Cool thanks I'll look into it.

Edit: Hey thanks 6.
My main influence I guess as far as what I would like to be able to do vocally would be Tommy Rodgers of Between the Buried and me, mixed with a little Phil Anselmo from the Down II era.

I know it's kind of a wide spectrum worth of vocal ability, but that's my ideal goal. I can actually already to death metal style vocals fairly well, but they don't really fit in what my band is writing, or will most likely write.
