I just had the pleasure to see one of my favorite bands of all time play. And while there are a lot of people who "ehn" them or whatever they are still probably one of my biggest musical influences. I'm talking about Metallica, i had the pleasure to see them this Saturday in Montreal, a rare sight. The floor ticket cost us about 140$ each but it was hell of worth it.
I went with my little 15 year old brother, and the guitarist in my band, my drummer went the next day (two day).
The security was too strict (come on kicking out people for moshing), there wasn't he same vibe as other metal concerts, no the crowd wasn't as intense and there wasn't as big as a group vibe in the venue. No there were business men, what looked like soccer moms and families and just a whole variety of people, there was a good vibe going on though, as soon as the band came on.
But Metallica KILLED it. Every song, tight as hell and they treated the crowd great, everybody was in awe, the fact that these guys are the age that they are and still playing like that KILLED me. The most being when they cracked into Master Of Puppets, me and my guitarist just nodded at eachother walked away from our very good front spot view and killed the mosh pit. It was this moment where as cheesy as it sounds, I realised how much this meant to me and how i'd never forget this moment, its almost overbearing, this band has stayed a constant for years, have stayed a musical inspiration and if it weren't for them i would not be the person i am today. The fact that our whole band got into it and were able to talk about it after the weekend like a bunch of giddy school girls says more as well.
No matter that i'm studying jazz in one of the best musical programs in the country and while this band may be snobbed by fellow "jazz head" peers means nothing, I wouldn't be where i am without this band, and while my playing and the songs that i do may exceed the musical ability to play metallica, they still have probably my favorite and most comfortable songs to play by any standard.
Does anybody else have any thoughts or stories to share about seeing your idols play on stage? Surely i can't be the only one with the musical mangina willing to share.
