Session Work

Wasn't sure where to put this...

I have been offered a chance to do some session work. I am really excited about it, and looking to build my portfolio to do more. However I am not sure what a good going rate is. I am in the Raleigh, NC area.

Any tips, hints, advice, examples; would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Are they asking what your rates are? The remuneration for most all of the recording dates I've done was set by the artist or the studio. I suppose if you're getting more offers than you have time for, you can set your own rate.

It may depend on the type of work. For commercials/jingles, an hourly rate normally applies. For artists/singer songwriters, I've been paid 'per song'. The last time (Dec. '09) I got $100 per tune. Not bad, but not great. It took about 40 minutes to get what was needed for one song.

If I am reading him right he has indicated starting point is $100 and also stated that he sets up 3 hour blocks. In this job it is bass for three alt rock tracks. I pride myself on being a first take kind of guy in the studio.

Bottom line is I have recording and playing experience and a portfolio of work that got me the spot. However I am by no means even close to an established session player. I would love to be one though. I don't want to sell myself short but I also want to treat this as a career building opportunity.
