Session Work Offer

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone.
Im new to this forum, so if Im in the wrong area, sorry about that.

I have been offered some session work to play on a cd release of a young band.
These guys seem to have their stuff together, but would like upright/double bass on one track. They have sent me a demo of the song and the score.
Ive been playing bass and bass geetar for nearly 20 years, but never done any session work, before, but have played as a hired gun for some years.

Is there any trick to this?
What and how do I charge? Hourly, track, travel time, etc?

Any help would be appreciated.

The gear I mostly use is a german upright, a sansamp, and eden nemesis 2x10, and a 60s fender jazz

Wrong forum, since it is to do with upright I would move this question to DB forum.

It sounds pretty straight forward. Since you have been playing for a long time, do you know anyone who has done session work in the area? Are musicians unionized? If so, that would make things easy.

I would charge XXX per hour with a 4 hour minimum and then in 2 hour blocks up to 8 to 10 hours total. I typically won't go over 8 hours but DEFINITELY not over 10 hours (it typically just gets stale if you try and push it too much more than that). What you put inside the XXX is up to you and the market that you're in. Place a call to the closest Union and find out what scale is in your area and then decide how much "better" you are than "average" (keeping minimum professional standards in mind) and charge accordingly...(it really is that simple!) Keep in mind that guys like Will Lee (NY) or Abe Laboriel, Jr (LA) or Michael Rhodes (Nashville) START at triple scale so don't price yourself out of work...
Good Luck and take advantage of what could be your first break in your area...Be smart, be fair, and BE ON TIME! LOL! God Bless...

Peace,

T

How about $50/take

Actually, the advice that tommixx gave is perfect (and he's got plenty of experience with sessions) and you really do need to find out what the union rate is and go from there.
