Maybe you're thinking of woodshedding? My understanding is woodshedding is where the player is one or more of the following:

- no longer in a band
- socially unacceptable to larger society for some reason
- women do not respond to him (anymore)

and he practices and plays at home alone all the time. That's me (and I'm all of the above).

Shredding is where you play as many notes in as short a time as possible as much as possible.

Shedding requires one to have a coat of fur that they molt seasonally. Shredding is most likely what you mean.

I would normally say this belongs in the technique section, I am pretty sure it does not belong in "Basses".

But since I have no idea what you're talking about, I can't say for sure.

Post a link.. it's obviously a verb of some sort, but you may be confused. When I googled "bass guitar shedding" I zero results, along with a...

"Did you mean: Bass guitar shredding?"

EDIT: I saw your link. It's either a typo or they mean "woodshedding", IMO.

(Wood)shedding is going off to a solitary location (in days of olde, the woodshed or maybe a sweat lodge) and practicing for hours upon hours, with an unfortunate emphasis on monotony and boredom. Having tried this myself I can vouch for two things: (1) It is an effective way to improve your chops and (2) It is quite painful after a short while.

It kind of means woodshedding but Gospel drummers started the shedding thing. A "shed session" or whatever is when a bunch of drummers sit in a circle of trade 4's or 8's ect. Mostly of wankery.

OK, OK, folks. The word IS " 'shedding", a contraction of "woodshedding." Woodshedding is, as others have hinted, derived from the practice of "taking one out to the woodshed" to correct various social transgressions. In the context of music, it means spending a period of time alone, concentrating on intense practice for the ultimate goal of becoming a better technician.

IIRC the term comes from how Charlie Parker used to practice.

Because he used to practice upwards of 13-14 hours a DAY, everyone around got mad at him, so he used to practice out back in his wood shed.

hence the term "wood shedding" or "shedding" meaning to just sit down, and practice vigorously.

it's an actual term, and i'm moving this to Misc.
