Thumbs up Shipping Basses, finding boxes...

Sign in to disble this ad
(I hope this get's sticky'd)

I presently have two basses to ship, and no boxes.

So I trot on over to my two local music stores to ask if
I can have a few from recent shipments.

One has NO boxes (no recent shipments) but is very nice
about it. The other wants to charge me $20/box for used
boxes that come to them
. (And I am a customer
of both stores I might add...)

Then one of the buyers gives me a GREAT suggestion that
immediately pans out -- bicycle boxes!

I trot on over to my local bike shop, and next to the dumpster
are like 30 of them, so I help myself and am on my way!

Just wanted to pass this on to the rest of you who may need
a box on short notice.

Appliance stores also have lots of boxes and they usually are thicker and more protective than standard guitar boxes. Just have to get creative with the utility knife and packing tape..

Working in IT, I grab a couple of Cisco router boxes and slice-n-dice two boxes into one with prodigious amounts of packing tape .

My local Guitar Center welcomed me to go diving in the dumpster around the back of the store. I found several nice boxes for shipping a bass and a pair of speakers.

If you live near a Guitar Center,Sam Ash, etc., raid their dumpsters.

Great find, IotaNet. I, too, have been in that dilemma, and forced to beg GC's salespeople for unused boxes, only to be given "the look."

But as mentioned, with a little luck there are always some by the dumpsters. . .

I just found out about Uline from the person I last sold to. I ordered the boxes and got them a day later. There was plenty of room in the guitar box for a bass in a hardcase that I wrapped in bubble wrap and I still had some room for a layer of peanuts all around.

One thing to note though. The boxes were about $6 each and you had to order (I think) 5 at a time.

Another tip

My Adler arrived a couple of weeks ago (and STILL haven't had time to plug it into my rig!!! This is killin' me.).

Box was in the best condition I've ever seen from a shipped guitar.

Mike put the word "GLASS" in HUGE capital letters on the front and back of the box. Everyone in the office wanted to know what kind of glass was in there!
