shipping basses overseas

I want to do it USPS, without a box, since it would be nearly impossible to get a box to fit a Roscoe bass with a Protec case.

How do you recommend I do this? I was thinking some bubble wrap around the bass and some extra lying around inside, then have the postal guys wrap some tape around the case.

Also, detune or not?
