Should i buy a compressor or a new guitar?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a cheap £350 Yammy BB series (with active pickups)

I love it but it has so much low end on it none of my mids or his ever cut through in a live setting. Sounds great on my bands recording after a little compression.

Im using an ashdown combo with my EQ settings being the lowest cut a bit the 2nd boosted abit the 3rd cut a little the 4th boosted a little and the highest boosted a little.(\ / \ / /) And the guitar EQ is flat.

I find if i cut the low end too much it ends up sounding 'flappy' and weak. Im sure its not my amp as when other bassists use it their mids and his cut through fine.

Ive been considering buying a compressor, would this help balance out my his and lows? and not effect the sound too much?

Any advice would be much appreciated

I'd give the Aphex Punch Factory a try. I just got back into playing bass recently, and after reading many of the compressor threads on this forum I decided to try it out. Best $99 I have ever spent. It added so much "punch" and overall smoothness to the tone. I tried using a DBX 166XL in the loop of my head, as well as an old Rocktron 360, but the Punch Factory in front sounded so much better. Works great with my active Schecter, active Spector, and my cheapo Ibanez passive.

I think the problem you have is the way you are EQing it to be honest
