Should I continue joining a band?

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay, I just want some advice I'm not sure if I want to join a band yet, since 2 of the bands that I know told me that they're good and they want me to join their. I played with one, all they knew was Canon Rock, a little metal songs (Like Escape The Fate).

We played with our teacher (Talented Keyboardist ). We couldn't play any good songs because the guitarist and drummer would go out of the room when they got bored (Meaning, me and my teacher played some 12-Bar or something they didn't know.)

They don't know this, but they think they're really good.. I wanted to tell them to learn the basics, but then that would be rude of me, since I know nothing about drums. I am also a beginner, since I've never actually joined a real band yet (Just Jamming bands).

My brother has seen the other band play, he told me I have to wait before joining that other band so that they could improve. (Well He really said: Don't tell them this: They Suck.)

And as a bassist having small hands, I think I'm no better than the bands that want me in. My teacher said I'm really good because I can widow, I still am not sure if I should join either or neither band.

Anyone advice on what to do with my musician life? Please don't flame me, but does playing Dream Theater help me?

I also want to ask a question:

I've been plaiying bass for 3 years (Though I kinda stopped at the 2nd year.) I've never actually joined a real band.

How do you guys get experience? Do you just play at home until you're ready or do you and your band practice and practice together? Not sure I'm ready enough to join a band yet

PS: If any of the things I've typed seemed like I'm arrogant sorry..

Advice please:

I think you should join one of these bands, since practising with other musicians is a very important part of bass playing in my opinion. Plus, it's always more fun with more people. And you should tell them to learn the basics.

What happens if they refuse the basics? O:

Just do it. You've gotta be bad before you can be good, so go out and get it over with as quickly as possible. Which band you join at this point is far less important than joining something and getting started; the chances are very much against any group you get in at this point ever amounting to anything in any sort of objective sense, anyway.

You'll make much faster progress working with other folks than you will playing alone; when it becomes obvious that you are taking the music more seriously than the others in the band, move up. Repeat as often as necessary.

Find people better than you, and join them. Problem solved.

Learning works best when you mix it up......

Theory, scales/chords practice, timing technique, reading music, playing live, practicing with a band, playing along with MP3's, going to a blues jam.

You learn different things from each aspect.

You learn TONS by playing live....perspective on how it all sounds to audiences, how to get along creatively, how to speak your truth and expect the same in return.

Good luck....it needs to be fun, too.

Thanks Guys. Though all of the musicians I know are either a little below my level, or far too good for me xD

I guess I should join one already.

I didn't say I wanted to be in it. That band is like one of the 2 choices I have.

Either Screamo, or Paramore.

I can't even choose, but I kind of dislike Screamo. But the "Paramore" band doesn't really know enough yet.

Either join, or not. Though I do know one very good drummer and guitarist.

The problem is that everyband that has an open spot for me don't like the music I play, so I'm gonna have to play their music..

just join, the worst that is going to happen is that you end up in a bad band, if you end up hating it, just leave.

Thank you Stumbo, for the link. I think it will help a lot
Playing with like minded people isn' really an option for now. But I know this amazing drummer, we've been planning to make a jamming band but can't find a "Jazz" guitarist. All we ever find is screamo, so all we can play is punk or screamo.

Thanks again for the help everyone
