Should I take it back?

My wireless unit's output is so hot I have to crank the gain and volume down to about 1 or 2 apiece to stop the amp clipping light from going on. I have it plugged into the instrument input jack. There is no -10DB pad from what I can tell.

Should I take it back?

If you aren't getting any distortion you are ok.

However, most wireless units have a level adjustment. Poke around the manual and see if your unit has one somewhere. It seems strange to me that the output would be that hot.

Thanks tplyons, and sorry about the errant posting. I was wondering how to figure out where it went when I posted. Not feeling very intellectual today.

Thanks I'll check it for a level adjustment.

Wireless packs often have a very subtle gain control on them, like a little screw or something like that.

Either way, the gain control on your amp is there to control how hot a signal is coming in, and it sounds like you're using it precisely to do that. I'd much rather have to have my gain set at '2' than '8' to get a reasonable signal level.

Heh. There's a little switch on the side of the wireless pack I hadn't noticed. It was set to 'mic'. I put it back to 0 and it seems fine so far.

you could also "pad" it, if you have further problems...

Microphone levels and instrument levels are very different. I'm not surprised that you had way too much signal with it set to "mic".
