Should instruments be sold as new if....

Do you think instruments that are put on the wall at music stores and clearly get played should be sold as new price wise? In my opinion that is a used instrument and the price should reflect that....it just burns my as$ when stores will sell the potentially abused instrument as new.

Anything is negotiable, or you simply walk out. There are laws about what can be sold as new, and the shops are probably simply following those laws.

Yep, they should be. "New" in retail means that it's never been sold before. Now whether it's in new condition or not could and should be a consideration in the process of negotiating a price. But the bottom line is that no one is forcing you to buy their product. YOU hold all the cards because you're buying. If the price isn't what you want to pay, then don't pay it.

Of course, if the whole market disagrees with you, you might never find a bass you can buy.

Wouldn't there be a distinction between "new" and "floor/demo" models?

Not necessarily. I don't care how many people have played it. If the store keeps the bass in as new working condition, and it is free of cosmetic defects from being played, it is as good as new and should be sold as such. If it has scratches from being played but is still in as new working condition, sell it as a demo.
