I normally don't do this kind of thing but I wanted to take a minute to relate a story about a local music store that I have had a relationship with for about 15 years now. The store is called Metro Music and it's an independant business that was started by a local man in 1960 ..yes, 51 years ago!!!!!. It is now run by his daughter ( he passed away in 1993). It's a small, kind of dingy store and it carries only a few lines such as Godin, Seagull, Traynor etc (although you can order in anything by GK, Roland..etc...basically any brands distributed by Yorkville in Canada) It also has a small rental section and they teach lessons as well.
What makes it so unique is the customer service...Danielle, the current owner, greets me with a genuine smile upon entering. She basically grew up in the store alongside her mother and father and is extremely knowledgeable about the products she carries. She will give you an honest assesment and ask all the right questions before selling you something. She even offers you a coffee made on a small espresso maker in the back of the store...who does that?????
So, although I can't get all the brands I might be interested in, I do shop there whenever possible. There is absolutely no pressure to buy anything and in fact, I have often stopped in just to say hello with no intention of buying anything.
For those who lament the death of the small business owner in the music world, have hope, because there are still a few of them out there and we should do all we can to support them. I definitely feel blessed to have one in my city!
