For all my life, I have been a rocker/metal head but recently that has started to change. After getting tired of the same old crap the radio plays both classic rock and so called metal station, I turned on to the country station and I have not changed it since.
I have found my mood to be so much happier and fulfilling. The music and lyrics have become so soothing to my ears and now all I want to do is play and listen to country. I have grown tired of the image and attitude that comes with rock. I feel like a geezer because the last concert I went to this summer (Rock Star Musical Festival) all I could think of is what a bunch of punks and thugs I was surrounded by. The hateful, tough guy atmosphere just did not sit well with me.
The big 40 is creeping up on me fast and I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I still like rock and old metal, but it just does not seem to have the same substance or heart that a lot of these country artists are bringing. |

I passed that in 1990...and now am past the big 6-0.
I play surf and enjoy it. If country moves ya, go for it. You should play what you enjoy.

| | | | Man I just turned 40 and like you was a metal head for 25 years and while i LOVE THE AGGRESSION OF THE MUSIC, it is no longer for me cos I am not young and pissed off at the world. That's what makes metal so good. Good luck wherever you head now cos it is nice playing and listening to music that doesn't include piles of bodies in front of the stage and bands that hopefully understand the craft of songwriting.

I love a lot of Bluesy 70-80's bands like Led Zep, Tesla, Aerosmith, ACDC, Etc. I've found myself going back and exploring the blues a little more. My son listens to country and while it doesn't sound bad it does to me at least have a little 80's rock sound to it. Maybe it's just in the producing I don't know. If it floats your boat, go for it and have some fun.

Even so, now at 32 I am finding myself listening more and more to things like world-fusion, folk, jazz, Scandinavian, etc. Likewise, I am also in generally a better mood. |

I've always loved rock and funk and liked to crank it up to enjoy it the most. But in my later years I don't see the need for as much volume. I still want it to kick ass, but now I want the musicians to kick ass, not the amps.

Eyesight starts changing, sleep becomes more important. Sex drive starts the down hill slide. Girls and women don't take notice of us like when we were younger.
And YES!.........for many of us, our musical tastes starts to change. Speaking for myself, I started to get into simple, melodic 2 minute pop, rock, fundimental 50s rock n roll and rock a billy and and like Pilgrim's comment..... ESPECIALLY Instro-Surf Music like Dick Dale, The Ventures and Los Straitjackets.
Also, I started to appreciate the importance of the bass guitar to be simple and support the music and the band. In other words, for the bass to played like a bass.
Yeah, 40 is some kind of turning point, even musically.
Soon, will come the need for vitamin V. (Viagra)

Personally, I find most of the Country music I hear on the radio to be so depressing that 30 minutes of it makes me want to jump off the Tallahatchie Bridge.

Used to be I liked bands like The Who, Cream, Steppenwolf, Moody Blues, etc played real loud.
Now I like them less loud. And a few years ago I discovered surf music.
Is that a change?

I also like the upbeat feel of the music and the lyrics. There is none of that hateful, negative animosity. To me country says, hey, I am human, I make mistakes from time to time, but my heart and soul are guided by a positive force and I ultimately live by the ways of the good book.
I have been dealing with depression for roughly 6 years now and anger issues my whole life. Country seems so far to be one of the better therapies especially for anger.
And of course being a bass player has opened me up to other genres of music like jazz, funk, and blues just to name a few. None of those has had the same effect on me as country has so far. |
