Simple cable testers

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi

Do any of you know how these simple cable testers (e.g. http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_mct10.htm) are supposed to be used. I have resently bought a very similar model but got no owners manual.

I guess you gotta plug both ends of the cable into the matching jacks on the gadget's sides, and then choose what do you wanna test with the knob. Then the LED shows you if it works or not. For a 1/4" cable for instance, positions 1,2,3 correspond to sleeve, tip, and ring. I guess that if the connection works, both LEDs (top and bottom) will be illuminated, or it will indicate this in some other way. In short, play with it and you'll find out how it works.

Looks like a pretty handy thing for a studio. What battery does it use, BTW, and how much did it cost?

Hi

I have now used it for real. It worked well indicating cables with trouble connection.

I'll guess that my first attemt using this unit surprised me in the way the LED's indicated. A normal 1/4" instrument cable (TS) indicates this way: depending on the position of the knob (1 = sleeve, 2 = tip, 3 = ring), the lower row of LED's show the left side connector in contact with the right side connector. E.g. left sleeve indicates connection to the right sleeve + ring. I.e. if the cable is balanced (TRS), I'll guess that you only would get a connection L sleeve -> R sleeve, L tip -> R tip and L ring -> R ring respectively.

This unit costed me 15 € and runs on a single 9V-battery.
