Simplifying the rig

I am frequently torn between:

• the desire to get "just one more" magic box that will finally achieve the sound in my head at the moment, and
  
• chucking all my gizmos and just plugging the bass into the amp.

Anyone out there with experience like this?

Anyone done it, and then gone back, or never gone back?

i am sort of in the process...

i have a bunch of effects that i used to use and now i am selling off a lot of my stuff for a more spartan rig...however it'll still have plenty of stuff, but my plans are as follows:

Bass->preamp->poweramp-cab

and in the effect loop of the preamp i will have one good effect unit (such as TC electronics Fireworx or an eventide unit) and one good looper
